Bioengineering systems

The Bioengineering Systems area aims to design and develop innovative systems enabling greater precision in diagnosis and therapy, risk-based prevention, earlier intervention, enhanced quality of life. Advanced computing, electronics, informatics, imaging and mathematics are used to integrate biological, medical, behavioural and environmental data.

Three main sub-areas can be identified:

Computer aided diagnosis systems

The main focus is to develop systems able to assist clinicians in interpreting medical data by using automatic systems. The final aim is to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce diagnosis errors and inter- and intra-reader variability. We develop devices, simulation methods, and image processing with main expertise in the fields of ultrasonography and microwave imaging with applications to vascular investigations, cancer detection, muscle characterization and hemorrhagic/ischemic stroke differentiation.

Systems for therapy

The main focus of this area is the development of technologies to improve treatments through targeted delivery of therapies. The research area ranges from the development of laser devices, radiofrequency and microwaves devices, systems for cryoablation to systems for movement assessment, with application in different fields, from oncology to cardiology to motor rehabilitation.

 Human machine Interfaces

The convergence of sensor technologies, nano- and micro-electronics, wireless technologies, and machine intelligence open new perspective to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and affordability of human-machine interfaces with many applications in healthcare. The research activities range from the development of highly energy efficient, non-obtrusive wireless monitoring devices to the design of innovative functional electrical stimulation systems with applications in rehabilitation, sport and ergonomics.
