Concrete loaded with graphene or biochar for shielding applications

Biochar (abbreviation for bio-charcoal) is a carbon based material derived from biomass or from sewage sludge (a side-product in wastewater treatment). Biochar is characterized by high carbon content and it emerges as a sustainable, renewable, environmentally friendly and inexpensive material. The partial substitution of non-renewable materials in cementitious composites with biochar is promising not only in terms of cost reduction, but also in improving the composites properties as the electromagnetic shielding properties.

Depending on the type and shape of the samples, the shielding effectiveness (SE) can be measured in a rectangular waveguide or in a compact anechoic chamber for normal and skew incidence. Transmission lines models or full-wave analysis are also used to analyse the behaviour of the composites.

This research activity is developed in cooperation with University of Bergamo, Department of Engineering and Applied Science.
