Satellite image compression

This activity addresses the development of novel algorithms for lossless and lossy compression of optical images and SAR raw data and images onboard imaging satellites. We develop rate control and quality control methods for lossy image compression, as well as joint compression/encryption techniques. Moreover, we are developing an innovative architecture for onboard processing, which exploits the computational capability of modern computing systems for space, in order to generate data products directly onboard and reduce latency for time-critical applications, e.g. detection of extreme weather conditions. Parts of these activities are carried out in the framework of projects funded by the European Space Agency and the European Union.
