Multimedia forensics

By using modern processing tools, images and videos can be manipulated with unprecedented ease, undermining the reliability of these media as probative evidence.

Our group has expertise in verifying the origin and integrity of image and video content, by analyzing traces left during acquisition, compression, and post-processing.

A promising technique is camera identification using sensor pattern noise, a sort of “fingerprint” of the camera sensor. This technology has been deployed in a search engine able to retrieve photos acquired by a given camera in a large collection of pictures. The same technology has also been used for smartphone authentication.
