Health&bio: Vital signs acquisition systems for cardiovascular and cognitive evaluation

These research activities involve designing intelligent biomedical systems for various fields, from cardiovascular and pulmonary monitoring to stress and cognitive load assessment.

The key steps in these projects are studying and researching advanced sensor technology, readout circuit design, interface between multiple sensors, synchronous data acquisition, Bluetooth transmission, and signal processing.

One of the main projects is in collaboration with the "Università della Salute e della Scienza" hospital in Turin to develop a low-cost and reliable device for Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) estimation. This cardiac velocity is a parameter closely related to arterial stiffness, the patient's hydration status, and the cardiovascular system's health. Despite its importance, it struggles to become widespread in daily clinical use due to the high cost and limited availability of devices for this purpose. Hence the need to make an easy-to-use and low-cost device that will increase the use of the clinical parameter in daily clinical practice. On the other hand, the goal of another project is to develop, through a multimodal approach, a system that acquires multiple physiological signals (ECG, fNirS, EDA, Temperature, Eye tracking) and, through machine learning algorithms, correlates them with the cognitive state (both stress and workload) of the examined subject in different scenarios (from aerospace to sports).
