Biography

Diego Pugliese, born in Turin on 19/05/1986, is a Fixed-Term Researcher type A at the Institute of Materials, Physics and Engineering of the Department of Applied Science and Technology of the Polytechnic of Turin since November 2018. He obtained at the University of Turin a Bachelor's Degree in Physics in October 2008 and a Master's Degree in Environmental Physics in October 2010. In February 2014 he obtained the PhD in Physics at the Polytechnic of Turin. From March 2014 to October 2018 he was first a Research Fellow and then a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the same Institute where he is currently a Researcher. His current research activity mainly concerns the design, synthesis and characterization of specialty oxide-based glasses for applications in photonic and biophotonic technologies. He has participated in 7 International Conferences, 5 of which as an Invited Speaker. He is the author of 49 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, 3 book chapters, and a patent for industrial invention. He is a member of the Italian Society of Optics and Photonics (SIOF), of the Optical Society of America (OSA), and of the Inter-University Consortium of Materials Science and Technology (INSTM).

Research topics

  • Synthesis and characterization of active phosphate glasses highly doped with rare-earth ions (Er3+, Yb3+, Yb3+/Er3+, Nd3+) for the manufacture of compact lasers and optical amplifiers in the form of optical fibers or rod waveguides
  • Synthesis and characterization of glass-ceramics for photonic and biomedical applications obtained by nucleation and growth process starting from phosphate glasses doped with Er3+ ions
  • Synthesis and characterization of highly transparent calcium-phosphate glasses capable of combining solubility in aqueous media, transparency in the near-UV region, low intrinsic attenuation loss, and good thermal stability during the extrusion and drawing processes.
  • Synthesis and characterization of low phononic energy and highly nonlinear tellurite and germanate glasses for the development of compact supercontinuous sources characterized by high compactness, stability and efficiency
