Metamaterials, High Impedance Surfaces

The research on metamaterials and passive High Impedance Surfaces (HIS) is dealing with the study and the synthesis of the geometry of such “synthetic” materials and the optimization of their response to an external electromagnetic excitation. These materials are used in various applications, like miniaturization and reduction of blocking in antennas, generation of high power microwave pulses, etc.

Up to now the activity has been focused on the study of an innovative structure where the variation of the surface impedance is obtained by varying the width of a microstrip line embedded in a grounded multilayer substrate. In some conditions, the synthesis of the structure can be carried out in closed form. Analytical, numerical and experimental data are in good agreement. Both planar and conformal configurations have been considered.
