Instruments for wire ropes monitoring and rope integrity

Steel wire ropes are nowadays widely employed in several transport systems such as cableways, people movers, elevators and chairlifts. The reliability of these systems is strictly related to the rope integrity; for this reason ropes have to be periodically tested according to specific regulations.

The research, which is carried out in cooperation with the Department of Electrical Engineering and with the Department of Hydraulics, Transport and Civil Infrastructures, is focused on the development of instruments and non-destructive methods for the analysis of wire ropes. The main research results are:

  1. a magnetic instrument able to detect both localized and distributed rope faults
  2. a method for the accurate localization of rope defects
  3. a vision-based system for the analysis of rope elongations.
