Development of Fiber Optic Sensors (FOSs) sensors based on low cost plastic fiber optics (POF)

Optical fibers have been historically associated mainly with high speed long-haul telecommunication links thanks to their high bandwidth and low attenuation, but there is a growing interest also for their application in the field of sensing. The research in this fields deals

  1. with the development of Fiber Optic Sensors (FOSs) sensors based on low cost plastic fiber optics (POF)
  2. with the sensor characterization
  3. with the design of remote acquisition systems.

POFs sensors have been developed for several applications such as structural civil and mechanical monitoring.

Part of this research is carried out in cooperation with the Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB, Torino) and with the Materials Science and Chemical Engineering Department of the Politecnico di Torino.
