PROBA-V Super Resolution (ESA): SmartData@PoliTO Wins!

A team from DET comprising four people (Andrea Bordone Molini, Giulia Fracastoro, Diego Valsesia and Enrico Magli) has won a challenge organized by the European Space Agency on image processing for satellite images. The challenge lasted six months and involved “super-resolving” images from the PROBA-V satellite, i.e. estimating a high-resolution version of a scene from multiple low-resolution acquisitions taken within 30 days of each other. The researchers, who are also affiliated with the SmartData@PoliTo lab, have employed an approach based on deep learning, using artificial intelligence to register the images blindly, and fusing them into a high-resolution image.
