Localization with signals of opportunity and hybrid systems
In difficult environments, such as urban areas and indoor environments, GNSSs show degraded performance in terms of precision and availability. In these cases Signals of Opportunities (SoOs) can be used to complement or to substitute GNSS. SoOs are systems existing for their own purpose that can be exploited for positioning.
Another possibility is to integrate GNSS receivers with other systems, such as Inertial navigation systems (INS), odometers, and so on. The benefits of using GNSS with an INS are well-known: GNSS can calibrate INS, INS can provide position updates at a quicker rate than GNSS, INS can be used when GNSS loses its signal. The two systems are complementary and can be employed together.
This research activity has been devoted to the study of signals transmitted by Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) emitters, and in particular from the emitters of a Single Frequency Network (SFN) of a Terrestrial DVB (DVB-T) system. Simulation results have shown the feasibility of positioning systems based on DVB-T-SFN signals.
Experiments of INS-GNSS integration have been performed in the ISMB lab, and the research is focused on the integration algorithms (especially based on Kalman filters).
