Development of Wireless Sensor Networks for Environmental Monitoring (HW / SW / TLC)
A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a wireless network consisting of spatially distributed autonomous devices using sensors to monitor physical or environmental conditions. A WSN system incorporates a gateway that provides wireless connectivity back to the wired world and distributed nodes.
The RSG developed a large experience in the design of WSN especially devoted to environmental monitoring operations. Their members design both hardware and software/firmware of the sensor boards and pay particular attention to low cost and multipurpose solutions.
Some good results in WSN research field were obtained with the first low cost GPS network designed to monitor the Grand Jorasses serac on the Monte Bianco. The installation was made in 2009 and the network is still operative.
A new version of the network have been realized in 2012 but it is still in the test phase, and it is based on DGPS techniques to monitoring the glacier displacement in order to improve the measurement position accuracy.
