LACE - Laboratory for Antennas and Electromagnetic Compatibility L.A.Q. Laboratory

The Istituto Boella Laboratory for Antennas and Electromagnetic Compatibility (LACE) hosts the Politecnico Electronics and Telecommunications Department High Quality laboratory, funded by the university in 2002. In 2004 LACE, which was previously based in the Politecnico, moved into the laboratory cluster shared by ISMB and Politecnico.

Its main activities are:

  • studying, designing, producing and assessing prototypes of innovative antennas, with particular attention to new applications in the telecommunications field;
  • modelling, characterising and assessing the electromagnetic channel;
  • carrying out research into Electromagnetic Compatibility and testing for the certification of apparatus in a reverberating chamber and shielded anechoic chamber.

The activities of the laboratory revolve around analysis, study, design, prototyping and testing on a range of themes, from double polarisation broad band antennas used for “smart antennas” for frequencies around 2 GHz to 18 GHz reflect arrays for point to point communications, to miniaturised antennas for micro-aircraft, to antennas to heat ionic plasma and high uniformity environments for dosimetric studies of circuits and integrated robust electronic systems with regards to EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility).One of LACE’s sectors of work involves the use of the EMC laboratory, which takes electromagnetic compatibility measurements, provides support for companies looking for solutions to fulfil the requirements of European directives and co-designs products, working with companies on circuit design and the production of electronic circuit boards. Its work ranges from carrying out low tension EMC testing (in the anechoic chamber, in the lab or on site in the client’s premises) to product engineering support.

The EMC laboratory works with small and medium-sized companies which operate in the various areas of electronics: consumer, domotics, industrial, car, railway, etc. More in general, the activities of LACE may be of interest to companies which produce telecommunications equipment, companies which manufacture devices with electromagnetic emissions and bodies involved in the field of protection from non-ionised radiation.

Among the equipment available there are: indoor (anechoic chambers) and outdoor (3-axes positioner) antenna test ranges, network and spectrum analyzers up to 70 GHz, equipment for EMC of active devices and computing and specialized software facilities.
