Bio-inspired electronics for robotics and biomedical applications

This activity targets the implementation of ultra low power smart electronic systems inspired by the concepts that regulate the functioning of the central nervous system. Its key features are an event driven and asynchronous data-flow, joint with a time-encoded information approach implemented through digital signals. The best advantages of analog (continuous information) and digital (modularity, robustness) schemes are exploited by these innovative bio-inspired electronic systems.

One of the first applications on which the research is focused are humanoid robotics, where common “traditional” sensory, information processing and communication are shifted to this new paradigm: numeric data are progressively replaced by temporal properties of digital events, requiring a significant change in system design.

The bio-inspired concept is also applied for the readout and the elaboration of biosignals, drastically reducing the amount of samples to be collected and the further elaboration and data transmission. In particular the work is focused on advanced devices for EMG signal detection and elaboration for gait analysis and rehabilitation.

A second application area in which bio-inspired approach is applied are the Implantable Drug Delivery Systems, where the efficiency of electronics and data communication are a key issue, for reducing power consumption and remotely controlling the implanted biodevice.
