NEWCOM - Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunications
NEWCOM (Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunication) is a European Network of Excellence funded by the 6th EC Framework Programme and putting together the groups working on the development of wireless telecommunication standards and systems beyond 3G .
It was organized into seven Departments, characterised by basic research on well-established topics and grouping leading European researchers active in those topics, and five Projects, dealing with "hot" topics whose solution requires multidisciplinary skills. NEWCOM was one of the largest NoEs of the VI FP, and Politecnico di Torino was the largest participant.
The Microwave and Opto-Electronics group has been actively involved in the development of system-oriented modeling strategies of high frequency nonlinear modules, and in particular of the power amplifier. Such models allow to include the effect of RF nonlinearities into the simulation of the complete communication chain, thus allowing for the estimation of the impact of the RF/microwave RX/TX section on the overall system performances. The research unit has collaborated to the dissemination/teaching activity among the partners of the net, in particular teaching a course on RF design and modeling at the network PhD School.
The IPL Group was administrative and scientific coordinator for Politecnico di Torino, and scientific responsible for activities related to wireless multimedia communications.
